Friends of TREAD supports three programmes: Day Care/Child Development Centres, the Grace Tailoring Centre and the Orphaned Assistance Programme.
DAY CARE/CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRES
TREAD runs 4 centres for children to provide care before and after school with meals, activities and homework supervision. Clothes and school uniform are provided along with medical care and children are taught self-discipline, personal hygiene and a work ethic which they pass on to family and peers. The local primary schools have been transformed with full attendance rates and extra teachers provided by government. It costs around £20 a month per child to provide this care before and after school each day. However all donations are gratefully accepted.
The first centre to be opened was the Trinity Day Care Centre in Kudunure. The three remaining these centres – Sarah, Hannah and David – are in the Orissa/Chatisgarrh tribal forested region and were run by TREAD in partnership with Compassion East India until earlier this year when Compassion reluctantly withdrew its work from India. The centres were then taken on by Friends of TREAD as a new project – Project 200+ see below
Trinity Day Care Centre
This centre now supports around 100 children solely by funds raised by Friends of TREAD and has run since September 2000. Cost of food and living have increased over the years so we estimate £20 a month provides 6-day week care for one child throughout the school year including 2 sets of new clothes a year and 2 nutritional meals a day. However regular donations of all amounts are welcome as are one-off gifts. Some sponsors enjoy an ongoing relationship with an individual child, whilst others are happy for their money to go towards the whole project without linking with a child.
NEW Project 200+.
In March 2017 Compassion International was forced to withdraw from India so there were no more funds for its three Child Development centres run in partnership with TREAD. Vasanth, Director of TREAD India selected 200 of the most needy children from the 675 children who attended these three centres and FOT put out an appeal to launch this new Project 200+.
GRACE TAILORING CENTRE, PODIA ORISSA
Based on the Sarah site, this workshop provides 12-month courses for up to 20 needy girls to give them a skill for life and independence. At the end of the course each girl is given her own sewing machine. This course works out at only £300 per student for the whole twelve months, including materials, use of equipment, tutors, accommodation and food costs. Some people are happy to sponsor a girl for one course, whilst others like to give regular monthly donations which can roll over each year.
ORPHANED ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME
Provides full care for orphans, semi-orphans and also an educational assistance programme for further education for promising students from poor families.
